James Leveille

President & CIO, Embarc.biz
James Leveille enjoyed a successful decade long career in information and communications systems management before embarking on his entrepreneurial journey to chatter the barriers to business success for those less privileged. Haitian born, he attended the State University of New York at Stony Brook, where he studied mathematics but also indulged in the unique undergraduate research program of this top five public research institution. With the guidance of top researchers and the pioneers of the early Internet, he acquired the systems admin and programming skills to land a top paying job at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NYC. His career quickly blossomed thereafter in progressively more challenging roles at companies such as Kentetsu World Express, Olympus America, Dime Savings Bank, Verizon, North American Telecom and Adecco.
Having failed to actually capitalize on the first Internet bubble, Mr. Leveille has spent the last 12 years assisting minority and women entrepreneurs to adopt and develop new technologies ahead of the next economic expansion. To accomplish this, he designed a business incubator model called Emerging and Minority Business Advanced Resource Center or EMBARC to launch new ventures and innovations from a facility while operating virtually as an incubator without walls. In turn, the EMBARC.biz Web portal is being developed as an intelligent business development platform to enable digital entrepreneurs of the 21st Century knowledge economy. Leveraging regulated crowdfunding, crowdsourcing, open innovation, and strategic corporate and university partnerships, EMBARC.biz will bring unique assets and capacity to women and minority-owned startups and small businesses to give them the competitive edge in the technology-driven global marketplace.

Nabila Founounou

Fellow, Mount Sinai Innovation Partners
Dr. Nabila Founounou has experience in basic science, which started as an undergraduate student in Dr. Noselli’s Laboratory, where she studied the role of microtubules in mRNA asymmetric localization of JAK/STAT pathway ligand during polarized invasive cell migration. For her PhD, Nabila joined Dr. Le Borgne’s team to study asymmetric cell division and Notch signaling-dependent cell fate decision. Nabila’s work showed that the small GTPases, Septins, are involved in a mechanical role to overcome the tension of adhesive contacts during planar cytokinesis in epithelial cells. Her work demonstrates that the defect in cell fate acquisition is an indirect consequence of differential cytokinesis failure. To date, Nabila’s studies have touched on cell signaling, regulation of adhesive contacts and cytoskeleton dynamics during cell migration in a developmental context. Moving forward, Nabila is keen to use her background to focus on understanding how biochemical signals are translated into mechanical ones during large-scale morphogenetic processes combining classical genetics with biophysical approaches and quantitative live imaging analysis. Specifically, how planar polarity mobilizes the cytoskeleton to promote cell movements and how these movements are transmitted within the tissue.
